Step 1: Designing Your Cake Topper in Cricut Design Space
- Create Your Text
Open Cricut Design Space and start a new project. Use the Text tool to type your desired message, such as “Happy Birthday” or the guest of honor’s name. - Choose the Right Font
Select a bold or script-style font that is easy to cut and provides enough stability. Great choices include “Babette” or “Cricut Sans.” - Weld the Letters
Adjust the letter spacing so that the letters connect naturally. Then, use the Weld tool to merge the letters into one cohesive piece. - Add a Shadow Layer (Optional)
To create depth, use the Offset tool to add a shadow layer behind your text. This makes the topper sturdier and adds a professional touch.
Step 2: Preparing to Cut Your Design
- Adjust the Size
Resize your design to fit your cake. A width of 5–7 inches is ideal for most toppers. - Select Your Material
In Cricut Design Space, set your material to Glitter Cardstock or Heavy Cardstock to ensure clean cuts. - Prepare Your Mat
Place your cardstock on the StandardGrip mat, glitter side up, and use a brayer to smooth it out to remove any air bubbles.
Step 3: Cutting the Design
- Load your mat into the Cricut machine and follow the on-screen prompts to start cutting.
- Once the cutting is complete, carefully peel away the excess cardstock. Use a weeding tool to remove any small pieces stuck in intricate designs.
Step 4: Assembling Your Cake Topper
- Attach the Shadow Layer (Optional)
If you created a shadow or backing layer, glue your main design onto it. This adds thickness and helps your topper stand out. - Secure the Stick
Attach an acrylic stick or straw to the back of your topper using hot glue. For extra stability, cut a small rectangle of cardstock and glue it over the stick to hold it in place. - Add Final Touches
Decorate your topper with embellishments such as rhinestones or glitter for extra sparkle.
Step 5: Ready to Shine
Your personalized cake topper is now ready to be the centerpiece of your dessert table! Simply insert the stick into your cake, and you’re good to go.
Tips for Success
- Font Matters: Use bold fonts for stability, especially for longer names or phrases.
- Test First: Always cut a smaller, less detailed version of your design on scrap material to test your settings.
- Store Carefully: If you want to reuse your topper, store it in a dry, flat place to prevent bending.
