DIY St. Patrick’s Day Cake Topper with Cricut

DIY St. Patrick’s Day Cake Topper: Add a Touch of Irish Charm with Your Cricut!

St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect time to add a little sparkle and charm to your desserts! Whether you’re baking a festive cake or simply want to elevate your decorations, a DIY cake topper made from cardstock is an easy and eye-catching way to celebrate. In this tutorial, we’ll create a stunning cake topper using black cardstock, black glitter cardstock, green glitter cardstock, and gold foil cardstock. This design features classic Irish symbols—a four-leaf clover, a leprechaun hat, and a pot of gold—to bring luck and charm to your St. Paddy’s Day festivities.

Materials Needed:

Step 1: Cut Out Your Shapes with Cricut

Open Cricut Design Space and upload or create the following shapes:

  • four-leaf clover from green glitter cardstock
  • leprechaun hat from green glitter cardstock, plus a black band and a gold foil buckle
  • pot of gold from black cardstock, with gold foil accents for the coins on top

Create the Enlarged Pot of Gold Base:

  • Duplicate the pot of gold shape and enlarge it so it can serve as a sturdy background for your cake topper.
  • Cut three layers:
    • Top Layer: Black glitter cardstock
    • Middle Layer: Black cardstock for stability
    • Back Layer: Black glitter cardstock
  • Stack and glue the three layers together with dimensional foam dots to create nice layers, that will add extra durability and a striking backdrop for the smaller toppers.

Cut Settings for Cricut:

  • Glitter Cardstock: Select “Glitter Cardstock” with More pressure. Use the StrongGrip Mat and press the material down firmly with a brayer.
  • Gold Foil Cardstock: Use “Foil Poster Board” or “Heavy Cardstock” setting.
  • Regular Black Cardstock: Use “Medium Cardstock (80 lb)” setting.

Step 2: Assemble Your Cake Topper

  • Layer and glue the hat’s black band and gold buckle onto the main green glitter hat piece.
  • Attach the gold foil pieces to the top of the pot of gold for a realistic shimmering effect.
  • If you’d like, use foam dots to add dimension to the different elements.

Step 3: Attach to Sticks

Once your pieces are assembled, glue a cake topper stick to the back of topper. Make sure it is securely attached and dry completely before placing it on your cake.

Step 4: Decorate Your Cake!

Gently insert the topper into your cake and adjust as needed. The glitter and gold foil will catch the light beautifully, making your St. Patrick’s Day cake a true showstopper!

Matching St. Patrick’s Day Cupcake Toppers

To complement your cake topper, create matching cupcake toppers using the same designs in smaller sizes. A glittery four-leaf clover, a sparkling leprechaun hat, and a mini pot of gold will add the perfect festive touch to your cupcakes. These are made with the same black cardstock, black glitter cardstock, green glitter cardstock, and gold foil cardstock, ensuring a cohesive and eye-catching St. Patrick’s Day dessert display. Attach them to toothpicks and they’ll be ready to add some extra charm to your treats!
